ISO tank container vs road tanker: how to choose

February 22, 2020

Chemical tanker moored at an oil harbour

The choice between an ISO tank container and a road tanker comes down to three questions. How far is the product going, how many modes will it use, and how many grades travel together? Answer those and the equipment usually picks itself.

When a road tanker wins

A road tanker is a tank built onto a trailer. It loads at the terminal gantry, delivers direct and returns for the next lift. It wins on domestic and near-EU lanes where the product goes from terminal to depot in one road move. Compartmented tankers add a second advantage: several grades in one vehicle, each in a sealed and metered compartment, so one trip serves a filling station or a depot that takes petrol, diesel and heating oil together.

When an ISO tank wins

An ISO tank is a pressure vessel inside a container frame. It lifts from a road chassis to a rail wagon to a vessel without the product being pumped. It wins on multimodal and long-distance lanes, on small parcels of high-value product such as base oils and additives, and wherever the product must arrive with the seal it left with. It also serves as short-term storage at destination, because the receiver can discharge over days rather than at once.

Cost and time

On a pure road lane the tanker is usually cheaper and faster, because there is no lifting and no container handling. On a lane with a rail or sea leg the ISO tank is usually cheaper, because the product is handled once at each end instead of pumped at every change of mode. Cleaning cost matters too: a dedicated tank on a repeat lane avoids a cleaning certificate on every run.

World Logistics Services operates both. Tell us the product, the route and the volume, and we recommend the equipment with the cost of each option side by side.
