World Logistics Services moves petroleum by rail in tank wagons and ISO tank containers from the Latvian ports along the east–west corridors, and combines rail with road and short-sea legs in a single booking. Rail suits regular volumes on fixed lanes, where a block of wagons costs less per tonne than a fleet of trucks and keeps product off the road.
Rail tank wagons from the terminals
The Freeport of Riga, Ventspils and Liepāja are all rail-connected, with sidings at the oil terminals. Product can be loaded from tank storage directly into tank wagons and railed to inland depots or border transloading points. We book the wagons, arrange the loading slot at the terminal and issue the rail consignment note (CIM or SMGS, depending on the destination network).
ISO tanks by rail
An ISO tank travels on a container flat wagon and transfers to a road chassis or a vessel without the product being pumped. This makes it the equipment of choice for intermodal lanes: rail for the long leg, road for collection and delivery. Latvia’s 1520 mm gauge network meets the 1435 mm European standard gauge at the Polish border; ISO tanks cross that break of gauge by crane, while bulk in wagons is transloaded or bogie-exchanged.
Intermodal planning
- Road collection at your terminal or plant
- Rail for the long inland leg
- Short-sea from the Baltic ports where it saves distance or duty
- One booking, one document set, one tracking reference
Dangerous goods by rail
Petroleum products travel by rail under RID in the EU and under the SMGS Annex 2 rules on the 1520 mm network. We apply the correct classification, wagon placarding and documents for each network, and we prepare the T1 or e-AD where customs or excise status requires it.
